How cool is this?
Larry Gilg is very fit and has an effective sprinkler system for his garden. He's also made a large rainwater tank by connecting several small pickle barrels. Have a read:

I love it Chook! I have to make one of these and pump water out of a rain water tank.
I like the bike-driven water pump, but it's not a new idea. Back in the 1970's there was a great anti-war book called "The Ugly American"; one of the central stories was about an engineer in Asia who built irrigation pumps powered by bicycles. There was a strong anti-communist theme running through the book.
All that aside, I found his pickle-barrel rain tanks interesting. Perhaps the manufacture of rainwater tanks is less common in the USA? Certainly long-thin ones for urban properties are becoming increasingly common in Australia. I wondered whether these would grow algae on the inside because they are semi-transparent to sunlight...
