BEETROOT, A REAL PASTY AND SOME DESSERT

image

I love growing beetroot because you can eat the whole thing and it all tastes so good. I picked these today and there are still quite a few left. I don't know why I didn't sow more...actually now I remember why - it was that REALLY hot weather we had in March. Luckily I sowed more in April and again just recently. They look so wonderful in the garden, with their dark green leaves and crimson stems and they don't seem to get attacked by anything much at all.

I cook them using one of Jamie Oliver's recipes and we have them hot one night and then cold after that. It involves lots of whole, unpeeled garlic cloves, a handful of oregano, some olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper. I will put the recipe on Gardeners' Gastronomy.

Another night I made my mother's recipe for Pasty Slice. I will put that on the link too. Here are all the vegetables and a bit of finely diced kangaroo, all raw and ready to go into the pastry.

I love making pastry and my mother's recipe is foolproof and excellent. It has some self-raising flour in it which makes all the difference. I use this recipe for all pies and just add a tablespoon of sugar if it is for a sweet pie.

Yum. Now that is what I call a decent pasty!

I also made pears in citrus sauce with the last of my pears and the first of her oranges. One of my favourite desserts...I feel as though I have written this before. Please excuse me if I am repeating myself!

I am not a pastie person, but that slice looks scrumptious. Will you post that recipe? Please? I promise I'll give it a whirl - might even take a picture when I do. :)
